The establishment of the Centre for Language Studies and Generic Development (PBI), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has been approved by the Higher Education Department (JPT) on January 27, 2007. For more than a decade of operation (2007-2018), PBI adheres to its core values in realising a planned agenda. The FIVE (5) Core Values of PBI are Brotherhood, Creative & Innovative, Integrity, Friendly & Care and Professional. PBI believes that cooperation as a team is crucial for the success of the agenda outlined.
PBI comprises of three departments namely the English Language Department, Third Language Department and the Department of Human Sciences. At the undergraduate level, PBI offers 28 courses categorized as University Compulsory Courses / University General Courses that are taken by all UMK students. PBI offers these courses at all three campuses; UMK Bachok, UMK City Campus and UMK Jeli Campus.
At the postgraduate level, PBI offers Master of Arts and Doctoral Degree programs in seven (7) areas namely 1) History and Civilization; 2) Religion and Contemporary; 3) Development and Value Education; 4) Organizational Industry Psychology; 5) Social Work; 6) Language Studies; and 7) Communication. Currently, PBI has 73 postgraduate students (28 undergraduate and 45 PhD students).
To date, PBI has 100 staff comprising 91 academic staff and 9 administrative staff. Ther are also a number of academic staff that are currently pursuing their PhD degrees locally and abroad.
PBI has been reviewing plans for the next 3 years and has produced the PBI Strategic Plan 2018-2020 document. This strategic plan is a key reference and guide in realizing the direction of PBI in the future. For the year 2018, the RISE (Restructure, Invest, Systematise, Empower) approach has been implemented by the PBI management to achieve its annual targets. This approach is encourage productive and effective outcomes in achieving the objectives of PBI.
I look forward to welcoming the cooperation of various parties - government and private agencies, industries and institutions to jointly develop the field of language education and humanities in Malaysia. It is hoped that this website will provide an overview of PBI's current activities and achievements.
