ROAD TO HARMONIOUS ASEAN SOCIETY PROGRAMME ( ROHASP)
ROHASP is a noble collaborative effort between the Centre for Language Studies and Generic Development (PBI) and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science (HUSO), Prince Songkla University, Pattani, Thailand. The idea to organize ROHASP was firstly initiated by Dr. Bordin Waelateh, the deputy Dean of HUSO. Henceforth, it was well-received by the Director of PBI upon realizing the emergence of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 as an important agenda for South East Asia.
This programme aims at providing a platform for students from both countries to discuss on matters pertaining to the formation of ASEAN as an economic group by the year 2015. In addition, it focuses on sharing and exchanging ideas relating to areas such as political stability, blurring of cultural identity, globalization and economic transformational programmes. AEC envisages the following key characteristics:
(a) A single market and production base,
(b) A highly competitive economic region,
(c) A region of equitable economic development, and
(d) A region fully integrated into the global economy.
Students from both universities take part in fruitful discussions which lead to the formation of resolution as to how both countries will tackle problems arising from the AEC projects. Apart from engaging in serious academic discussions, students are also given the opportunities to learn and experience cross cultures from each other. Some cultural performances which are part of the programme itinerary are valuable learning experience for all the students. Students from both universities exhibit the uniqueness of their cultures during the International Cultural Night performance. It has successfully built strong relationship and ties among the students. It has also brought them closer and they bring home sweet and fond memories of ROHASP.
PBI hopes that this programme is able to bridge two geographically close nations together in a genuine effort to facilitate the attainment of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015. On a final note, AEC as both countries have discussed is a state of affair which citizens of ASEAN should embrace with an open heart.
