Date:

12th February 2013 – 4th March 2013

About the program:

This program was initiated when Dr. Naoki DN ABE, an assistant professor of Oita Prefectural College of Arts and Culture Japan (Oita Geitan) visited our center in the middle of 2012. He then proposed a student exchange programe, in whichstudents from Japan will have a short stay in Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK).

The first batch of students from Oita Geitan stayed in Kelantan for three weeks from 12th Feb 2013 until 4th March 2013 and had experienced intercultural activities throughout the program.

During the program, UMK students and Oita Geitan students visited these places:

  • Local industries (Batik, Songket, Silverwork, Meat Floss, Curry Puff, Fish Crackers, Coconuts Farm, Banana Farm, Malaysian Traditional Kite, Wet Market etc.)
  • Local schools (SMS Faris Petra, MRSM Tumpat and had Culture Exchange program with students of MRSM Tumpat.
  • Local villages (Pantai Sri Tujuh, Kg. Teluk Renjuna)
  • Other places (Pengkalan Kubor ,- a small town at the Malaysia-Thai border, Museums in Kota Bharu, and Pantai Sabak - historical site visit )

Throughout, the program, Oita Geitan students stayed in students’ hostel in UMK and they interacted with our local students and community.

They were also provided home stays in Pantai Sri Tujuh, Tumpat, Kelantan and they had real life experience with the local villagers during their stay.

This program was beneficial for UMK students especially to those who are taking Japanese language course in UMK. During the program, UMK students not only practise Japanese language and learn Japanese culture from Oita Geitan students but also had the chance to see a Japanese traditional cultural performance “Yamato – The Drummers of Japan, Malaysia Tour 2013” which was organized by Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur, in USM Kubang Kerian on the 22nd Feb 2013.

At the end of the program, Oita Geitan students and other international presenters from 10 different countries presented papers in the Intercultural Learning and Community Engagement 2013 Colloquium organized by the Centre for Language Studies and Generic Development (PBI) on 27th & 28th February 2013 in UMK Bachok Campus.

Finally they were entertained with students’ cultural performance, dances and, songs that brought fond memories to them. These were great inter -cultural experience and activities that made the Japanese students and UMK students understand each other better.

Objectives:
